Hi guys,

I need your help.

In a big backup domain, there are alomost 80 SAN media servers. The master has 4 cpu and 8G memory.

We are planning to increase SAN media server to more 100 SAN media server.

What is your suggestion?

To seprate to backup domain? or increase CPU and Memory?

Is there any one know how to calculate the CPU and Memory usage in a master server?

Thanks.

The NetBackup 6.5 Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide chapter 1 - "NetBackup capacity planning" is a good start.

But with 80 media server you are probably in unknown territory ;)

Thank you ,Nicolai.

I already checked the guide. It indicates 100 media servers is maximum.

8CPU and 16G memory is recommended.

But I just wondered ,how does they calculate it ? any reason?how come?

I just worry about if one master is crashed ,100 media server's backup job will be dead too.

I don't think there is a hard limit on the number of media servers. I think they put up a number as a sort of insurance against very large installations like yours.

Why not log a call and have a chat with the support guys or better if you have a Business Critical Account Manager let him/her arrange a meeting with Business Critical Services. They are pretty sharp, and won't cost you anything for a quick chat.

Maybe it's good idea to try SAN Client?

SAN Media server is overkill in most cases I've seen, maybe this can substantially reduce the number of SAN Media servers in your environment.
