Hello,

How do I recover if the retention date has past?   (I tried doing a catalog lookup and that too says "found no image")

Thank you in advance!

If the data was on disk, it is gone, you cannot recover it.

If the data was on tape, and that tape has NOT been written to since the expiration, you can try to run the Phase 1 and Phase 2 import of the tape.  This will mount the tape for Phase 1 in a tape drive and read the entire tape to determine what backup images are on that tape, and then you can use the Catalog function in the GUI to select which images to import back into the NetBackup catalog in Phase 2.  Full instructions can be found in the NetBackup manuals.

If the data was on tape and that tape HAS been written to since the expiration, you cannot recover it through NetBackup.  If the data is critical, someplace like Kroll or other data recovery specialists could help you recover the data, but it would be very expensive.

That is the whole purpose of retention periods... they should meet business recovery requirements. If they did, you have no obligation to even try. The problem with tape import is to know which media id's... If you don't keep record of which media is used every day, there is no way of knowing which media to import, as this data is removed along with removal of expired images.
