Hi, we are setting up a new NetBackup 7.1 master server on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. We have a few clients in a separate network in which there is a media server. The media server has two network links: one to the clients, the other to the network where master server is located. The two networks are separated and cannot see each other.
We can configure to back up the clients by the media server. But when we try to restore the clients, we got problems. I checked with some friends and they mentioned the server to do the restore job must be the master server. So the master server must be able to see the clients in order to restore. But in our setup, it is not possible to do that. How to restore data to clients in this case? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
You must have communication to the master to restore. Please see the diagram.

Hi Riaan, thanks for your reply. Is the restore performed by master server or can be done by media server? Is the restore data pushed from master server to client? In our network, the master server can see the clients via produciton LAN. But this LAN is not for large data transfer. Some of our backups are quite large.

Let's have another look at the diagram that Riaan posted:
IF the restore is initiated on the client, connectivity from client to bprd on the master is needed. No way past that.
If you initiate the restore on the master server, the MASTER then performs this connection to bprd. So, that whole section at the top right of the picture (User interface/command line/bprestore) moves to the master server.
Next, the master sends the restore intstruction to bpbrm on the Media server. bpbrm on the media server connects to the client as well as starts bptm on the media server. bptm on the media server sends data to tar on the client. Thus no connection between master and client. The same as when you do filesystem backups.
Please ensure that you have ALL of the following logs enabled for troubleshooting purposes:
Master: bprd (restart NBU after creating folder)
Media server: bptm and bpbrm
Client: bpcd and tar

Hi Riaan and Marianne, thanks a lot for your help! Now I have a better understanding about the process. So is there any documentation from Symantec that describe the whole process? I need some doc/KB as evidence to show to the customer.Thanks.
