i have a Symantec Netbackup 5.1 Enterprise installed.

Problem: Netbackup keeps overwritting /appending onto the same tape despite the entire list of free tapes/media (label as TAPE01 - TAPE20) i have in my volume pool-->Daily Diff.

my volume pool have > 8 tapes yet netbackup keeps writing on the very first tape (which is TAPE01) on the entire list instead.

Reten period is 1 week

My plan is,I would like to set auto label for Daily Diff back up  .i.e. 1st & 3rd week same tapes and 2nd & 4th week same tapes with 2sets(4+4 medias).

Kindly can any one help

you need to use Different Volume pools to meet your requirement, not label.

create 2 new Volume pools

for example like below

1) 1_3_daily_pool

2)2_4_Daily pool

move the requied number of tapes to these volume pools or make sure tapes are in Scratch volume pool

then

create 2 Daily schedule in the same policy

1)1_3_daily_incr

2)2_4_daily_incr

schedule 1st schedule to only run 1 & 3rd weeks of the month and 2nd schedule to run 2 & 4th weeks of the month.

you are done...

PS:- Netbackup 5.1 is out of support years ago( i guess your OS platfroms tooo)... you really need to upgrade to 7.X version as soon as possible.

Best to not try and micro-manage media in NBU. NBU will try to fill media with backups that are of the same retention and same pool.

Allow NBU to manage your media - it does a good job of it.
It knows where backups are written on which media id and will ask for it when you choose files to be restored.
No need for you to remember that 'Monday of week 1 is written on Tape01'.

it means... your tape have the enough space to hold the data from Monday to Thursday....

that is fine... you can leave this Management to Netbackup as Marianne suggested..

it looks like you are trying to more micro mange the tapes..

your initial request was " 1st & 3rd week same tapes and 2nd & 4th week same tapes with 2sets(4+4 medias)."

same set of tapes per week...but now you are looking on day basic... which is not recommented... give you more complexcity and confusions in future...

having suffient tapes does not mean that you need to allocated everyday seperate tape... save those tapes for future data growth... fault tapes .. adhoc backups.. and etc...

let Netbakup manage the tapes for you.. and let netbackup know want to backup and how many days you want to keep it... it will do the best job for you...
