We migrated to new hardware and upgraded both OS and app at the same time from a Solaris 9 server running NBU 6.5.6 to Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.10 running NBU 7.5.0.7. It was (and still is lol) a very educational process! :)
So you know, if you go to a different OS I believe you will not be able to migrate your image catalog. You will have to go through the import process to get those images into your new NBU catalog.

Also, if you are backing up Exchange Servers and not using GRT, you will need to learn about that. In that vein, you will also need to consider the disk space you will need for disk staging of your Exchange images, and how to configure it.

Hope this helps,

Incorrect.
Migration to other OS within the same 'OS family' is supported, such as Solaris to Linux.
This is the TN to follow:
Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448
For NBU 6.5 to 7.5, the above TN should be followed as well.
So:
Prepare Solaris 10 server with same hostname (IP can be different), install NBU 6.5 and patch to same version as current master.
Take hot catalog backup on current master (new STU on NFS mount is easiest to backup to and recover from) recover catalogs on new master.
Shutdown old master, change IP on new master and test comms with clients and media server(s).
Run a day or 2 on new master to ensure all is fine.
Upgrade NBU on new master to NBU 7.5 or 7.6.
(My recommendation is to upgrade to 7.6.)
For the upgrade, carefully work through the Upgrade Portal doc: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74584
Be sure to check EACH link in this TN such as the Upgrade Guide and SORT.

Solaris 8 end of life (EOL) was 4/2009 per Sun/Oracle. You really need to upgrade that system.
