Hi ,

We are trying to configure the backup for VM machines running on windows 2012 core edition -Hyper-V node using the below infra

Master : Redhat Linux (NBU 7.7.1)

Media server : Redhat Linux (NBU 7.7.1) with MSDP.

* Netbackup agent installed on the Hyper-V node & Hyper-V policy created at NBU end.

* Hyper -V intergration services are enabled on the node.

* Backup (Volume Checkpoint) option is enabled on the guest.

* VSS services are enabled on the Hyper-V node and Guest.

* Guest VM is running on CSV Volume (NTFS Volumes) & VM doesn't have any dynamic disks/pass thru disks.

Backup was failing with error 4201 and logs shows

FTL - vfm_freeze_commit: method: Hyper-V_v2, type: FIM, function: Hyper-V_v2_prepare
FTL - snapshot services: snapshot preparation failed: provider-private error.

This error is coming from Hyper-V VSS (not NBU):

VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_PROVIDER:(error value=0x8004230E)

Google found an Arcserve article with the same error:

https://arcserve.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/206858403-Hyper-V-AE0603-VSS-Shadowcopy-could-not-be-...

Above article references this Microsoft doc: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/clausjor/2012/06/14/vss-for-smb-file-shares/

I've also encountered error code 4201 while creating a policy for Hyper-V VM on SMB3 file share.

Can someone please confirm whether NetBackup support Hyper-V VMs on SMB3 file shares? Is there any plan for supporting that in the near future?

[NetBackup 7.7.2 test results] Creating a policy and manually backing up VMs on local volumes works but creating a policy for VM on remote Windows SMB3 share doesn't.
