Hyper-V vss writer failed [7] timed out

Hi

We have started to backup Hyper-V VMs, on Hyper-V on Windows 2012 R2

The backup fails and we found that the Hyper-V vss writer has failed with status [7] timed out on the two hosts owning the VMs we are trying to backup

Unfortunately we are not allowed to restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service which should reset the Hyper-V vss writer

Have found nothing the system & application eventlog, which have made me wonder if it is a shadow area issue.

Regards

Michael

"Solved" by running normal file backups of the VMs for now

Hmmm, had a similar type of thing with 2 hyperV parents two weeks ago. Backups initiate and do nothing, also no logs or errors. bpfis had some informaiton about creating the snapshot but it never gets done, no errors in app or sys logs. I then tried FS backups which just sat there doing nothing.

Was resolved after reboot :)

Unfortunately reboot is not an option when we are not allowed to restart the Hyper-V Virtual Manager service on these Hyper-V hosts

What do these commands shows?

vssadmin list writers

vssadmin list providers

If there are issues a reboot may be the only way to resolve. Snapshotting is outside of NetBackups control, we just request for it to happen.

The issue is set on hold, for the moment.
