NBU documentation is the best way to learn about features and options. NBU for Vmware Admin Guide is the best place to start: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000100619 It covers everything from explaining how it works, transport modes, how to configure it, etc. Happy reading!

could you calrify if you are looking for VMware host backups ( ESX & ESXi hosts ) or VM guests ( VM created on Vmware hosts)?

if that is the Vmware hosts backups,  Netbackup can not do it.. you need to Discussion options with Vmware team.. becuase it does not allow netbackup to installed.. etc...

if you are looking for VM Guests, you can do backups in 2 different methos

1) considering like normal physical server  by installing the Netbackup on each Vm and configuring the backups

2) configuring the VADP backups using the VMware as policy type.

you can review options in below link about the configurations senarios
