I have a tape with 005402L4 label, but when I do inventory only recognizes as 005402 and does not appear to L4 abbreviation.
Any idea how to solve?
thanks

If you take a view in the GUI under media mangement-> media  Netbackup may as barcode use either 005402 or 5402L4 but not  005402L4.

You can change how Netbackup map the barcode labels by using barcode rules.

DOCUMENTATION: How to change the Media ID Generation Rule to use the first six characters of the barcode versus the last six
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38876

Please note it may differ from vendor to vendor if media type is reported or not. Oracles does not but HP MSL does.

A barcode can only be 6 charters long.

The L4 indicate a LTO4 tape and is used internally in the robot to match tape drive types. e.g a DLT tape is not mounted on a LTO tape drive.

You are all fine. You do not need to change anything.

My question is because I have other storage units that feature full code 005402L4

For these 'other storage units' are they fulfilled by another library?

There are settings that you can manipulate on different libraries that determine what length of barcode is actually presented to NetBackup.

e.g.

you can get your library to present only the first 6 digits of an eight-digit barcode (we did this to prevent the presentation of the L* suffix so that we did not need to worry about media-id generation rules - they were always the same as the barcode)

OR

you can get your library to present all 8 digits of that same barcode. You would then utilise media-id generation rules to determine which 6-digits are used to create your media-id

This *can* be an issue if you change libraries & don't realise the settings are different - the new library can present all existing media on inventory as new media as the barcode is presented differently.

2 things are at play here. The tape barcode and the MediaID.

Right now you will want to configure the library. It is most likely presenting only 6 chars for the barcode as Andy mentioned. The tape has 8, the library sees 8, but when it passes that information to NetBackup, its only passing 6 of the 8 till you tell it different.

Once you see the correct barcode listed in a preview of a robot inventory, you can then configure the 6 char MediaID that NetBackup will use.
