Good Morning Netbackup collective.
A bit of background we are running NBU 8.0 on hybrid windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2. Master server 2k8R2 and media servers 2k12R2 (Don't ask). :(
We commissioned a new Quantum i6 with LTO7 drive robot. It has 200 slots and 25 for the Media Access Slot. The first tapes came back from off site to go back into the robot and here lies my issue. When I inventory the robot the robot returns "Volume configuration is up-to-date with robot contents" I can see the tapes in the MAP through the robot GUI. I ran robtest with the "s s" and it has returned the correct number of slots and I have run "scan -changer" and that looks ok as well.
scan -changer output:

I am at a bit of a loss of what to do next. The robot is aware that the tapes are in the robot. If I move a tape from a slot to the MAP and inventory the robot it detects the tape that has been plced in the slot but ignores the other 3 tapes which I am trying to inventory back into the robot. I have added VERBOSE to vm.conf and the event logs are not giving much away. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

OK here is the solution by default the the Quantum i6 out the box only allows the injecting of the media from the MAP vai the LCD screen on the front panel. You have to use the robots interface to change this behaviour. Select Library then on the right hand side under the operations panel select Configuration then settings, In the Settings popup under "IE Assignment Mode" change the setting from "Local UI Assignment to "Remote UI/HOST Assignment".
Just goes to show everyday is a school day. Thanks to everyone who responded your guidance is greatly appreciated.

You did select the 'Empty media Access Port Prior to update' ick box didn't you ????
If you did, I would just reinventory the library but fist move the tapes in NBU to standalone.
Move the tapes to standalone ... select in GUI, right click -> move -> untick the box that says 'Volume is in a robotic library'
Then re-inventory library

Many thanks for your response. Yes I have ticked "Update Volume configuration " and "Empty media access point prior to update" The tape is currently assigned to an offsite Volume group and the tapes that I am trying to inventory is in the MAP

Can we see what the robot reports w.r.t. MAP contents?
Please show us output of 's p' in robtest.
If may ask ask a silly question here - can you confirm that there are sufficient empty slots in the robot for the tapes in the MAP?
Here output of 'vmcheckxxx -rn <robot-number> -rt tld' will help.
You may want to redirect the output to a .txt file.

+ vmquery -m <media id> output for one of the tapes that is in the MAP and doesn't import into the library

Please see below the output from the commands. Marianne yes there are spare slots available.

Have a look at 's p' output. There are no barcode numbers that look like the barcodes in the media slots.

Bear in mind that this is what the robot itself is reporting.
@mph999 should be able to help here, but it seems like a problem to me.
Are the tapes the right way round in the MAP?
09-11-2018 05:09 AM
Marianne,
Yes the tapes have the bar code the right way round. I originally thought that maybe the bar code scanner was not working. But looking at the tape library interface the tapes in the mail slot report the full 8 character barcodes correctly. I tested this by moving the tapes around in the mailslot to see what the tape library interface reported back when they were moved around. This ruled out the bar code reader being suspect.

Still something wrong on the robot side, as the output of 's p' is what the robot is sending to NBU.
Do you perhaps have access to robot documentation with explanation of error/key codes?
09-11-2018 06:04 AM
Thanks looking into that now

I was also Goog'ling for 'Asc = 0x83, Ascq = 0x6' , and this link was found:
https://vox.veritas.com/qsuop67736/attachments/qsuop67736/netbackup/235767/1/robtest.txt
Clearly an attachments that belongs to a forum post, but I have not been able to locate the post.
It will be interesting to find the post as we see the same output for some of the MAP slots.

Hey
After googling too I found this PDF
and there I see this:
83h 06h 43542
Element contained within an offline tower or I/E station and is
not accessible for library operations

Thanks for all the replies, I sat next to the robot whilst issuing the inventory command and empty MAP tick box checked through the NBU GUI and the robot did nothing. The picker did nothing just sat in its parked position. I can move tapes about using robtest so its not a communication issue. The robotic diagnostics fail errrghh

You will need to find out from Quantum how to resolve those error codes.
Pass the robtest output as well as the info in @quebek's post to Quantum Support.
As long as the robot does not display barcodes in the MAP slots, it will not move the tapes.
*** One more thing ***
I don't know anything about this Quantum make/model, but mabe worth it to check if the MAP slots are seen as 'extended I/E slots' and if a license is needed to enable them...

Sorry that I'm late to the party - I see Quantum found the solution.
Interstingly, I didn't know about the default behavior - I hope someone asks me this next week, I'll look like a hero.
To add some value, the way to investigate scsi sense codes;
asc 0x83 acsq 0x6
Is to goto t10.org
Vendor ID, ASC/ASCQ, and Standards Identifier Codes
then
Additional Sense Data Information
then
Numerically Sorted ASC/ASCQ Values
In this case it is not listed, so it is vendor specific - time to call Quantum ...
So picking one kinda at random, just to complete the story:
53/04 T MEDIUM THREAD OR UNTHREAD FAILURE
This would be ASC 53 / ASCQ 04 - and relates to the feeding of the physical path around the drive components.

Quantum did not find the solution one of our Storage engineers found it. We were at the point of logging a call.
