Is it possible to restore data from tapes without fragement 1

Tom_Qin

We are running Netbackup 7.6.1.2 on windows 2008 server.

There's a windows-nt backup, the data is backup to three tapes. No stream.

Now we found the first tape is expired and re-used, try to import the tape catalog, but it seems the fragement 1 is already gone.

Is it possible to restore the data on the rest two tapes back without the first one?

Thanks.

No it is not possible. You need ALL of the tapes with all of the fragments. If you need to recover anything you would need to hire a Data Recovery specialist who may be able to salvage some of the files from these tapes

Not possible using NBU. You can Google for procedure to read tapes with tar, but I think it can only be done on a Unix server. On a side note - if your retention levels are configured in line with business requirements, don't spend too much time and effort.

It is probably possible with nt_ttu and netbackup tar, but reading tapes directly with tar is a lot work.

So I would ask the requester if he/she could uses a newer version of the files.

If you you go ahead with reading the tapes directly the ignore errors option is usefull, -I if remember correct from when I did on a Unix system many years ago.

The standard questions: Have you checked: 1) What has changed. 2) The manual 3) If there are any tech notes or VOX posts regarding the issue

Thanks Miahael, we just want to get the files on the rest two tapes back, not care of the file version.

Is there any more reference that i could refer to for your nt_ttu & netbackup tar?

And you said 'If you you go ahead with reading the tapes directly the ignore errors option is usefull, -I if remember correct from when I did on a Unix system many years ago.'

May i know this is in the nt_ttu you mantioned above?

The ignore errors -I option was on netbackup tar.

Havn't really used nt_ttu, so can help you the options there.

If you don't care about file version, why not just restore them from valid backup ?

Oh, sorry, did not catch you meaning. We'd like to have the data on the two tapes because in that time period we only this copy of data.

Could you tell me more detail about the netbackup tar? how to use it? Working for windows system?

Thanks.

Seems you are out of luck.

Extract from NetBackup Administrator's Guide, Volume II
(Under this topic: About reading backup images with tar)

You cannot use the NetBackup modified-GNU tar or tar32.exe to extract files from a NetBackup for Windows backup image.
