For me the only way to remember is experience!
If you have seen enough status 71's (for example), you will remember it!
Quick lookup on NBU server (or Admin Console on my desktop):
bperror -S <status-code> -r
or Status Code Guide: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5181

Open up the job details from activity monitor in Admin Console, Detailed Status tab...'Troubleshooter...' button, type in the code in the box and 'Lookup'.

There is no official categorization.
Also not a good idea to even try.
For example, status 12, 13, 14 are file-related, but status 13 and 14 can also be socket/network related.
Experience is the best way.
Troubleshoot each error as per the guides provided above.
