Issue with configuration of tape drives on SAN media server

prats
Level 4

Hi,

We installed the SAN media server option on a Windows 2003 server this week. The installation went ok.But the device configuration wizard on the master server does not list the tape drives for this new SAN media server, just shows the robot.

The OS can see the tape drives and the robot as well. So,looks like the zoning is ok.

The scan command on the new media server shows following;

C:\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>scan
************************************************************
*********************** SDT_TAPE    ************************
*********************** SDT_CHANGER ************************
*********************** SDT_OPTICAL ************************

Drive 9 Serial Number      : "xxxxxxxxx"
Drive 10 Serial Number      : "xxxxxxxxx"

Reason: 0x0

The serial numbers come up ok, I have blanked them out in the above output.

I had to manually add the server name to the media servers list on the master server properties, but the status now shows as "connected".

Under the "Devices" > "Media Servers" - server is coming up as "Offline".

We have not yet restarted the svcs on the master server, as there are backups running on other media servers.

Will restarting svcs on master server, solve the issue? or there is a bigger issue here?

Thanks in advance for all the help

Regards

You are missing Library based tape drive license.

Have you checked/verified this section in the HCL?

"If using the IBM Windows Tape Device Drivers be sure to choose the install_nonexclusive.exe executable. This option permits a tape drive to be accessed by multiple processes on a Media Server, which is a requirement for NetBackup.
NetBackup requires the IBM Data Path Failover feature to be disabled on the IBM tape device driver. To disable this feature, open the reg folder of the IBM driver package, double-click DisableDPF.reg, and reboot the system.
- IBMTape driver level 6.1.9.5 tested on Windows"

Please also check output of 'scan -tape' and 'tpautoconf -t'.

'Scan' output is only reporting the robot, The robot is reporting on its drives.
You also need to see an entry for each tape drive similar to the following where the OS device name for each drive is listed along with inquiry info:

Device Name  : "Tape0"
Passthru Name: "Tape0"
Volume Header: ""
Port: 5; Bus: 0; Target: 0; LUN: 8
Inquiry    : "HP      Ultrium 1-SCSI  E39A"
Vendor ID  : "HP      "
Product ID : "Ultrium 1-SCSI  "
Product Rev: "E39A"
Serial Number: "xxxxxxxxxx"
WWN          : ""
WWN Id Type  : 0
Device Identifier: "HP      Ultrium 1-SCSI  xxxxxxxxxx"
Device Type    : SDT_TAPE
NetBackup Drive Type: 3
Removable      : Yes
Device Supports: SCSI-3
Flags : 0x0
Reason: 0x0

Have you remembered to stop and disable RSM service?

Which tape drivers are installed?

Do you have the following minimum license keys installed on the new server ?
Enterprise Client
Library based tape drives
Shared Storage Option

Is the new server listed in 'nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose' output on the master?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

RSM is stopped and disabled.Have installed the IBM tape drivers.

The license keys summary shows licenses for

Base Netbackup

Remote Media Server Support

Remote Client Support.

Robotic Library Sharing Support

and the Shared Storage Option.

The server name is listed in the ouput for the command - 'nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose' but comes up as "Active for disk jobs".

The Licenses mention following as well:

Microsoft RSM Robotic Libraries

ADIC Robotic Libraries

IBM ATL Robotic Libraries

Fujitsu LMF Robotic Libraries

Storagetek Robotic Libraries

Inline Tape\Copy

Additional Drives\Robotics

Datastore

The drivers were installed via the install_nonexclusive.exe. About the registry key, the key does not exist on the other existing Windows SAN media servers which are sharing the same IBM library.Since this new SAN media server is a critical server,a bit hesitant to add that reg key to the server...

Just wondering whether the reg key will prevent the tape drives from getting detected by NBU.

scan -tape does not list anything nor does tpautoconf -t.

"scan -tape does not list anything nor does tpautoconf -t"

Nothing is going to work as long as this is the case. NBU needs SCSI inquiry info from devices in order to see/use them.

Double-check Device Manager. check properties of tape drives.

Delete tape drives and rescan.

Once tape drives can be seen by 'scan' and 'tpautoconf' you NEED to ensure that "Library Based Tape Drives" is listed in bpminlicense output before you will be able to config robotic tape drives for this media server.

Sorry for the late update..

I uninstalled the tape drivers and installed them again, rebooted the server. The drives were recognised properly after that. The Library Based Tape Drives license was there.I did not check the licenses on the master server.
