It is safe enable NTFS compression for a STU (NBU 6.0 MP7)

Hi all:

One client have problems with the SL-500. So we are in process to enable STU using NBU 6.0 MP7 on windows Media server.

The problems is that they just have 1.5TB for the STU and I was wondering if can be safe enable NTFS compression (to gain some space and don't impact the client) (maybe also change block size) to squeze more data while the SL-500 becomes on-line again. We can choose over windows2003 (32/64bits) or windows 2008 (32/64bits).

So is help about his is really appreciate.

Thanks a lot.

\PD: the actual media server is a windows 2003 but we can migrate if the performance or the advice about NTFS compression need it.

Not a good idea.

Microsoft Technet article 251186, entitled "Best Practices for NTFS Compression in Windows", states that "Heavily loaded servers with a lot of write traffic are poor candidates for data compression."  This accurately describes a NetBackup system performing backups.  See:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/251186

Also have a look at this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH160238
Backup to basic disk storage unit fails with Status 84

Customer should get tape library fixed ASAP or maybe use tape drives in robot as Standalone drives in the meatime.

About NBU 6.x:

Are you aware of the fact that all 6.x versions reached EOSL in Oct 2012?
And that W2008 is not supported with any NBU 6.0 version?

I tested BasicDisk on compressed drive several years ago and it worked.

But CPU load become significantly high, and performance is poor. I recommend you to use it after testing, and not to use it for important data.

also note that NetBackup 6.0 is EOSL version. Should upgrade to 7.x.
