What is that thing in NBU terms that you keep calling vpool?

NBU refers to storage devices using virtual concept called storage unit.

Hi Mikhail,

Thaks for the reply,

I think pictures will explain better than words .

Pic01.png

the issue is I can not restore using copy 2 and copy 1 is not availble becuse of drive01 failier .
What  needed is to make copy 2 as a primary copy so I can restore .

Thank you

Your understanding of media management in NBU is wrong on so many aspects, so I don't go into weeds here. The facts are that both tape drives are in the same robot and part of the same storage unit. If NBU can't understand that drive 1 is down, you can mark it as down in Device Monitor and then tape will be picked up by the second drive.

First or secondary copy and volume pools are not relevant here.

Okay - this is what I see in your screenshots:

You have 1 tape library with 2 drives.
(TLD(0) with LTO6_DRIVE01 and LTO6_DRIVE01)
Both drives are UP  (TLD control) - so according to NBU, nothing wrong with either of them.

These physical devices then make up the Storage Unit (LTO6_STU) -
1 STU that consists of 2 tape drives that can be used simultaneously.
(You also have a disk STU, but it is not clear what this is used for.)

In the robot, you have some LTO6 cartridges (media).
The media is presumably split into Volume Pools - Primary_Vpool and DR_Vpool.

The Backup policy in your screenshot is configured to make simultaneous copies to each of the 2 pools.
So, both tape drives in STU LTO6_STU will be loaded during backup.
There is absolutely no relation between tape drive and volume pool.
NBU decides which tape drive in the STU to load with copy 1 tape and which drive with copy 2 tape.

The tape in Primary_Vpool will always be copy 1 and the Primary copy that will be used for restore (unless you manually change this).
NBU will use this tape (media) in and load it any of the tape drives that are UP.

If you want to restore from copy 2 in DR_Vpool, there are several ways to do this.

I am surprised that discussion like this can be created by "SCS Symantec NetBackup 7.6.1 Administrator".

Oh Dear!

This means that @trkmany should at  least understand the VERY BASICS of NetBackup plus a LOT more in order to pass a NetBackup Admin certification.......

The only potential issue would be if these tapes were in separate locations, but they all seem to be in the same robot.
