Looking for help with Netbackup, NetApp, and Fiber

I'm relatively new to this software and IT in general. My task is to figure out how to get our NetApp to backup to our tape library over fiber instead of ethernet. Netbackup is running on a Windows 2003 box, which is attached to NetApp and tape library through a brocade switch. I'm using a qlogic HBA on the server and using sansurfer I can see and bind to the NetApp. Right now the cifs are being backed like network shares over the lan, but we would like to switch it to fiber for speed reasons.

Just looking for some general guidance on what I made need to do this or the steps to take.

Can the filer see the tape drive?  (sysconfig -t)

You must have network connectivity between the netbackup server and the netapp filer.  The NDMP control communication can't go over fiber, only the actual tape data.

Once you see the drive, make sure you have it configured in the NBU side (I usually use the wizard, but you can configure it by hand).  The ndmp host is the filer, and the path is shown in sysconfig -t (usually something like 'nsrt0a').

Once complete, set up an NDMP storage unit for the filer to use and you should be set.

Here is a quick overview of how NDMP works through Netbackup

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/287646.htm

Then you can make a decision of what kind of configuration you need, for what I see an NDMP Local Drive config is what you are looking for, take a look and let us know.

regards.

Dataline, what speed are you seeing for your backups of NetApp CIFS data over the LAN?  What tape drives are you using?  I ask because it might not be worth the hassle if your tape drives are old.

Our machine is a Quantum Adic Scalar i500. It has two IBM Ultirium TD3 tape drives. Looking at our log, it saying 5523kb/s for the transfer. Also, the NDMP is an additional license that needs to be purchased, correct?

yes you need to buy the license.
