MUST_USE_LOCAL_DRIVE and STUG in 7.0

I have found various posts regarding MUST_USE_LOCAL_DRIVE not working as expected when using Storage Unit Groups.

According to this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH72711

the failover policy in STUG should ONLY apply when all available drives for the local media server are DOWN. Extract from TN:

"- If all drives are down when a backup job starts running, another drive will be assigned from the next available storage unit group. This also applies for Storage Life Cycle Policies or Storage Unit Groups."

It seems that this behaviour is applicable only to NBU 6.0 up to 6.5.3... Does this mean that behaviour is different from 6.5.4 onwards?

My experience is the same as users who have posted the following:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-654-unexpected-behavior-storage-units-groups

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/mustuselocaldrive-not-working-within-netbackup-653

When STUG is used, MUST_USE_LOCAL_DRIVE seems to be ignored - the failover policy in the STUG seems to be used instead. I have tried different failover options. Local media server is hardly ever chosen...

Is this a bug introduced with post-6.5.3 versions or is there now a change in intended behaviour?

(NBU 7.0 on Solaris 10 Master with Solaris 10 media servers, all on NBU 7.0. MUST_USE_LOCAL_DRIVE was set with nbemmcmd and shows 'yes' for each media server (and master) when 'nbemmcmd -listsettings -machinename <media server>' is used.)

Hi Marianne... we have 2 media server and 1 master. MUST use local drive is not checked.... most of our backups mounted on media server, and we are taking backup from there. so what it will affect if we use this option.... like performance. log files. speed. also i dont have clear idea about "MUST use local drive" option. can you please tell me. we were using nb 6.5.

Dear All

I have found, at least when using SLP's that nbemmcmd is the way to get this working.

I remeber from long ago that the Must Use Local Drive only ever applied to the Master Server and would not do anything against a Media Server.

However, it is the Master that controls the duplication jobs and so it is against the Master that the command must be used:

nbemmcmd -changesetting -machinename <mastername> -COMMON_SERVER_FOR_DUP preferred -masterserver <mastername>

or

nbemmcmd -changesetting -machinename <mastername> -COMMON_SERVER_FOR_DUP required -masterserver <mastername>

So you can choose between preferred or required

hope this helps
