Hello Experts,
Two media are frozen and i could see logs as it contains tar-format data and cannot be used for backups in netbackup.
I could see its size as 0 kilobites.
Pls let me know what can be done to reuse the tapes.
Thanks,

Someone has used the tape to write backups with OS tar command.
So, tape has not been used by NBU, but by OS Admin. That is why NBU says 0 Kb. No info in NBU about this backup.
When tape is loaded, NBU sees the OS tar header and freezes the tape.
This is normal behaviour when NBU sees non-NBU header on a tape.
To see what is on the tape before you unfreeze and overwrite it in NBU, you can load the tape into a drive and the use OS command to list tape content.
e.g. if tape is loaded in /dev/rmt/0,
# tar tvf /dev/rmt/0
To reuse it in NBU, go to Host Properties -> Media Server -> select media server name > Media -> Allow Media Overwrite
Select 'tar' format.
Unfreeze the tape.
NBU can now overwrite data on this tape.

Thanks so much i had already gone through to the articles.
Let me tell you the troubleshooting steps i had taken.
1:- enabled bptm logs in media server
2:- made a seprate pool for this media and created a test policy.
3:- Unfreezed the media.
4:- Found media sixe is 0 kilobytes
5:- Started the backup.
6:- Checked the logs in BPTM and found tar-format data and cannot be used for backups.
In our environment we dont use any other format. I dont know from where have we got this TAR format data.
My Question.
1:- If its showing 0 kilobites why its giving message "tar-format data and cannot be used for backups"?
2:- Does it still contain anything?
3:- I can understand its The media contain a nonNetBackup format. But dont know where did we get it?
4:- If i erase it would netbackup use it after that?
Thanks,

Could somebody pls also tell me in which backup is this TAR format used?

1.
The media is a tape formerly used for the NetBackup catalog backup. For example, the log entry may be the following:
FREEZING media id 000067: it contains Symantec NetBackup (tm) database backup data and cannot be used for backups.
The media is frozen because it is an old catalog backup tape which NetBackup does not overwrite by default. The bplabel command must label the media to reset the media header.
and also check
On the Administration Console, proceed to Host Properties | Master Server/Media Server
Open the properties for the media server in question.
Select the Media tab.
The Allow Media Overwrite property overrides the NetBackup overwrite protection for specific media types. To disable the overwrite protection, select one or more of the listed media formats. Then stop and restart the NetBackup services for the changes to take effect.
Do not select a foreign media type for overwriting unless you are sure that you want to overwrite this media type.
For more details about each media type, see the NetBackup Device Configuration Guide.
2.check in Tape reports whether it contains any data?
Have u labelled the tape?
3. do it contain data first check
4. donot erase ,just unfreeze

Pls find the observation.

No results for both the media.
2:- No i didnot label the tape. Should I?
3:- Its not showing any data.
4:- I unfreezed it and and tried to take the backup. But its showing same TAR image and netbackup can not write on it.
5:- How is it possible its showing 0 data and still image is there?

All details are there except.
The following media formats on removable media can be selected to be overwritten:
■ When ANSI is enabled, ANSI labeled media can be overwritten.
■ When AOS/VS is enabled, AOS/VS media can be overwritten. (Data General
AOS/VS backup format.)
■ When CPIO is enabled, CPIO media can be overwritten.

Thank You Marianne................. Excellent Answer............This is really happening............
I was not aware we can directly write on a tape without involving netbackup....
Can we restore this tar well ?
What about the retention?

OS commands were around LONG before 3rd-party backup products.
These OS commands on Solaris include:
tar
cpio
ufsdump
The problem with this kind of backup is that it can be used for ONE server only and the OS admin needs to manually keep track of each tape - which day/date, what is on tape, when to append or overwrite. So, no retention levels - ALL manually controlled by the admin.
That is why 3rd-party backup products were developed - multiple servers, mutiple sysadmins, how to keep record, accidental tape overwrites, tapes incorrectly stored, labeled, which OS command, etc, etc, etc.
In your environment, it seems that your OS sysadmins still like to be 'in control'.
Have a chat to them to find out why.
If this is what they want, they need to keep their tapes and not be put in the robot controlled by NBU.
tar backups can be restored with:
# tar xvf /dev/rmt/0
(See OS man pages for tar command)

You can perform a long erase if you want to destroy the previous data and make the tape available to Netbackup.

MEDIA OVERWRITE in Host Properties will work as well and so will Media Label with 'Verify Label' option deselected.
Media will in all cases need to be unfrozen first.
