Hi All,

I am using Netbackup 7.1.0.4 Media server with AIX 6.1 recently after the Library drives upgraded to LT04 on Quantum I500 Library the medium changer is keep disappearig from Media server.

When I do a ./scan -changer it not showing anything, then again I need to go for reconfiguring it by creating the ovpass for the control path driver and it works good for few hours then again it disappear from their and the drives turns to AVR mode.

Could you please suggest what causes the problem.

Have you enabled persistent naming support on this media server ?

Should do that device targets and LUNS does not change after system restart. Can be done through smitty.

If you do a lsdev, do you have multiple device files saying defined ?  That indicates that SCSI id is changing.

Have also seen issues with fiber attached tape drives, that went into a waiting for login state which meant that they was not logged into the fabric..In our case it could be seen in robot administration tool.

The standard questions: Have you checked: 1) What has changed. 2) The manual 3) If there are any tech notes or VOX posts regarding the issue

Bear in mind that NBU needs the OS for device access, so troubleshooting device-related issues must start at OS-level. Check errpt and /var/adm/messages for evidence of OS losing connection.

One more thing:

Symantec/Veritas no longer supports non-IBM libraries using ovpass driver.

See this extract from NBU 7.x HCL:

2. On IBM AIX, use of the IBM Atape driver is required with IBM tape libraries. The Atape driver's multi-path feature must be disabled.
3. NetBackup has been supporting non-IBM tape libraries (robotics) with an IBM AIX robotic control host using the "ovpass" driver for many years.
Changes and new functionality in AIX 6.1 and 7.1 have resulted in some issues with ovpass and an inability to support new functionality such as dynamic tracking and controlling SAS robots. Therefore, beginning with NetBackup 7.5, Symantec is no longer supporting the ovpass driver. Existing customers may continue to use ovpass as they are today, but if issues are encountered Symantec will not be able to resolve them. Symantec recommends using another OS platform as the robotic control host.

Although the HCL says that support for ovpass is dropped as from NBU 7.5, you can see in above statement that the issue is with changes in AIX 6.1

Best to attach the tape library to another supported media server (e.g. Linux or Windows).
