There are 5 drives in the tape library and every 1-2 days will 1 or 2 LTO5 drives went missing.   The issue resolved after we reboot the netbackup media / master server and /or tape library?

This normally happens when OS loses connectivity. Check Event Viewer System log for errors. Could be HBA problem.

Add VERBOSE entry to vm.conf on all media servers and restart NBU Device management service.

This will log additional Media Manager info to Event Viewer System and Application logs and will assist with troubleshooting.

In addition to Mariannes excellent advice (as always) as your signature shows that you are on Windows 2003 / 2008 you need to check the following:

1. The removable storage service needs to be stopped and disabled otherwise Windwos will take the drives away from NetBackup

2. You need the AutoRun registry key setting to zero on all media servers to prevent them dissapearing due to Windows interferring with them - see this tech note (applies to all versions of Windows): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842411

3. If you have some HBA software (HBA Anywhere / elxcfg etc) then use this to set persistent bindings on the HBAs to keep the drives persistent after any reboots

4. Check the settings on any SAN switches - some have an automatic reset when a data error is detected. When this is set any tape read error causes the SAN switch to re-set the bus which causes the drive to dissapear

Hope these help
