NAS backup is not happening through NDMP

Hi

This is to bring to your notice that we have an enviornment of EMC storage as well as EDL (in which virtual Tape Liberary configured) which is integrated with our Backup server (Netbackup Server) through SAN switch via zoning. Now our NAS server is on Data mover in which CIFS filesystem cut as a NAS server for which we have to take backup through NDMP on disk which is presented on EDL via Netbackup 6.5.6.

Our concern we are not able to configure NAS server as client of Netbackup, although we have given the host enteries in host file of the backup server as well as NAS server vice versa along with their Ip detail. And we are able to telnet the NAS server over 10000 port, also we have configured NDMP user's credential which is successfully accepting by backup server, but not able to connect it. It is throwing below error :

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>bptestbpcd.exe -client indelgg4nas -debug

Please have a look at the NBU 7.6 NDMP administration guide chapter 2 (page 31). It has a guide how to configure NDMP in Netbackup.

Hi

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>bptestbpcd.exe -client indelgg4nas -debug

is failing with error, because this command detects the NBU client installation on the client server, which in case of NAS server is not present(as NBU client software is not installed on the NAS server).

also to check connectivity use following commands from you NBU for NDMP server (which is your master server in your case)

tpautoconf -verify ndmp_host_name

tpautoconf -probe ndmp_host_name

Hi,

I think your NDMP configuration is faulty.

'tpautoconf -probe XXXXXXX' is supposed to come back with devices found on XXXXXX. See the NetApp chapter in http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31885 . (Provided by one of the NBU Experts)

Did you authorize NetBackup access to the NDMP host from master server under Media and Device Management > Credentials -> NDMP Hosts  for media server(s) acting as NDMP host?

If you are using remote media server backup (NDMP with no tape devices) - did you follow the steps listed in 'Configuring NDMP backup to NetBackup media servers (remote NDMP)'

You can also refer the below URLs, where the similar type of issues were discussed and experts had given the solutions for the issues.

Make sure you start the NBU client service to the same account that has got access to that NAS share and take the backup as normal windows backup.

You also need to check the licensing part for NDMP, when you want to backup directly from your NAS, it when you have shares using the CIFS protocol. As for mounted volumes with either NFS or SAN (FCP), you will use the normal Netbackup Client that you have in Unix machines and Windows because, for Netbackup, this volume is a local volume on server.

As advised by the previous posts, you need to check the below.

Admin Guide for NDMP (You'll need the NDMP License)

Check the whitepaper :

WHY NBU 6.5.x???

Are you aware of the fact that this version ran out of support more than 2 years ago?

You cannot use bptestbpcd command to test comms with NAS server because no NBU software is installed.
Use tpconfig commands as per above post. See TECH31885 for detailed info for your make/model NAS filer (should also work for NBU 6.5.x).

For NDMP config details, see NBU 6.5 NDMP Admin Guide: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52805
