NB 7.5.0.3 "Gotcha" list

Thought I would post these "gotcha" items, information I wish I had known and did not see in my scan of the update documents

1. SLP command changes -

I used to use "bpimagelist -stl_incomplete" and "nbstlutil -stl_incomplete" to display SLP in process and not complete. These seem to only display images not scanned yet, once they are in process, they no longer display.

Best option - "nbstlutil report" which provides a nice summary.

I am still seeking a command to display my oldest incomplete SLP

2. Media Server/Client install on unix. default of /tmp - REQUIRES 3 G of space! There is a technote for setting NB_TMPDIR - this caused me losts of troubles, especially since I push my update_clients - and found that if the install fails, the clients are left disconnected and backups fail!

The upgrade docs did a good job - I followed them and upgraded my netbackup from 7.0.1 to 7.5.0.3 easily in a few hours. Once I figured out to edit the /etc/vfstab and remove the space limit on /tmp, or use the NB_TMPDIR value to somewhere with over 3G of space, everything went pretty well.

3. OpsCenter - report on drive utilization - I wanted to see throughput in MB/Sec to my tape drives for the last 24 hours. Reports would show no activity from 0100 to report time.

Found a technote that it collects this information at 0100, so reports for last 24 hours are not what you would expect.

The technote for the TMP_DIR item is http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH189085

"Prior to installing NetBackup 7.5.0.1, 7.5.0.3 or later releases, administrators should verify that at least 3GB of swap space is available.

If enough space isn't available in /tmp, there are two methods available to resolve this problem.

Solution 1:

Set NB_TMPDIR to a location that has enough space.  Example using /usr/openv/tmp:

NB_TMPDIR=/usr/openv/tmp; export NB_TMPDIR

Depending on the shell used, setenv or set may need to be used to set the environmental variables.

*** New logic has been added into 7.5  that will cause the NB_TMPDIR to be honored first, when set in the users environment. See the related documents for more information.

Solution 2 - expand swap"

The OpsCenter report issue :

page 118 of the 7.5 features:

The Drive Throughput and Drive Utilization reports display data only till 1:00 A.M. and not till the time when you run the report. That is because OpsCenter collects data for Drive Throughput and Drive Utilization report once per day at 1:00 A.M. everyday after midnight.
Therefore the Drive Throughput or Drive Utilization reports are only able to report on data up until 1:00 A.M. on that day, even when run with a relative timeframe of Previous 24 hours. Similarly if you run Drive Throughput and DriveUtilization reports at 2:00 P.M. in the afternoon, the reports display the data that is collected until 1:00 A.M. only.
