We originally set our media id/barcode rule to 0 8 1:2:3:4:5:6 - and had the tape library only sending 6 chars.
So default media id and barcode were KZ0001 - after inventory.
We have since run some backups using those media ids - so data on media.
Our operations groups wants the tape library to send 8 chars - so barcode will now be KZ0001L7 and media id KZ0001
But assume if we make this change and run an Inventory - this will cause the media id's already used to go into stand alone and not associate with a robot anymore - not in volume group.
Is there any way we can do something before the inventory is run to allow us to not mess up the already used media??

The only way I can think of is to manually update the barcode for each media id:
vmchange -m KZ0001 -barcode KZ0001L7
You can create a text file with all media-ids and run the command through a 'for' loop.

A media id in Netbackup can only be 6 chars not 8 - if memory serves me right :)
Netbackup will know the "full" media id, but will internaly only use 6 chars
