NBCC fails with "no storage servers found!"

mtp0410

In running the NBCC command on a 6.5.3.1 master server to prepare for a 7.1.0.4 upgrade the command always fails on phase 2 with "no storage servers found!".  This kills the script and it will not proceed any further.  The problem here is there are no storage servers configured on this master.  Is there a way to get past this?

I think "no storage server found" is a information message.

Somthing else might kill NBCC - How does NBCC end - any messages or core dumps ?

For reference:

This is how the script ends: Hope this helps.

2.4  Obtaining Storage Server information...
NBCC encountered an error attempting to run the
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbdevquery -liststs -U 2>&1
command.  The exit status was 227.

no storage servers found!

Please correct this condition and run NBCC again.

There was an error encountered by NBCC in the
collection or analysis of the NetBackup configuration information.
No consistency checking will be done.  Please correct the issue and
run NBCC again.

First off I would reccomend downloading the 7.6 NBCC (that is its version rather than the NBU version) and use that.

It is worth looking in the output folder to see what is in the info file as it may give a clue

NBCC does tend to just stop once it hits an error - you have to fix that before it goes further

If there is no output then either run it with the -nozip -nocleanup switches or as it is an old version it probably asks you whether you want to make a support package in which case say "yes" so that you can take a look at the output

If you have an output let us see the main info files if possible

I suspect if you run this ;

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbdevquery -liststs

It will fail then, or rather give the no storage servers found message ?

I would certainly download a new version as first resort, as suggested by Mark

I am using the newest version of the NBCC tool.  I have also run the nbdevquery -liststs command and gotten the same error.  It is the weirdest thing...no one has ever seen this before!

So do you have storage servers?

Are you running this from the Master?

What O/S is the Master?

Give us what details you can so we get a full picture of your site

Thanks

You can always open a support case with Symantec. If NBCC find errors before upgrade - and it usally does - you will need support from them anyway.

I have a symantec case open on it...I was trying to do research as the symantec tech was not familiar with it.

this is a solaris 10 master server, it does not have storage servers configured on it. It is running the latest version of NBCC and will not be past the second phase.

What does nbemmcmd -listhosts -verbose say?

Are all the servers displayed in existance?

You will find 2 downloads on this page: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH156730

NBU 7.5.0.3 and 7.6 version.

Try the 7.5 version as well.

PS:
have you double-checked that you are running the correct Solaris nbcc version?
Sparc or x86?

Please also check if there are any stale entries in disk pools. Not sure if this could cause the issue but always good to check If the storage server was deleted without the referencing storage units or disk pools being deleted. If not you as a workaround you could also simply try configuring the null disk which requires u to create a storage server and then run NBCC again. You can find the steps to configure null disk in the below technote http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH169602
