NBU 7.6.0.2 client install failing

ChrisHemann

I recently updated my 2 5220 NBU Appliances to 2.6.0.2/7.6.0.2 (from 2.6.0.1/7/6/0/1).  Now trying to update my clients.  When I try to upgrade from 7.6.0.1 to 7.6.0.2, I receive an error stating :  "Version 7.0600.0113.1113 is already present on this host.  You must uninstall the existing package before proceeding."  Seriously?  I have always been able to upgrade the clients without uninstalling before.  Is there any way around this?  These are all Windows 2008 / 2008R2 / 2012 / 2012R2 clients.

Not sure which download you are using.

This one worked for me:

NB_7.6.0.2.winnt.x64.exe provides fixes for NetBackup (tm) 7.6[.0.1] on x64 Windows server and clients.

Are you trying to update your cilents from the Appliance?  The clients were removed from the Appliance RPM, so you may still have some un-updated 7.6.0.1 clients on there if you haven't applied the Windows Client "addon" RPM (last attachment listed) to update them to 7.6.0.2 clients:

NetBackup Appliance 2.6.0.2 Release
 http://symantec.com/docs/TECH215209

SYMC_NBAPP_addon_nbwin-7.6.0.2-SLES11.x86_64.rpm MD5: 60d5fd978ddeed0ae8dee13ab746f853 SHA1: 571a9743d151ac798eea8a2efdae9688a849d496
SYMC_NBAPP_addon_nbwin-7.6.0.2-SLES11.x86_64.rpm (1.5 GBytes)

I THINK the 7.6.0.2 Version string should be "7.0600.0214.0209" (with "7.0600.0113.1113" being the 7.6.0.1 equivalent), so I'm doing some educated guessing here on how you might be doing it - if I'm wrong, please let me know.

(If you need help getting this RPM onto your Appliance and installed, you might want to head over to the NetBackup Appliances forum)

I was able to upload the SYMC_NBAPP_addon_nbwin-7.6.0.2-SLES11.x86_64.rpm to my appliance without and problems.  I then connected to the appliance web interface to download the 7.6.0.2 Windows ZIP file and used those files for my install.  Doesn't make sense - I have always installed all clients using the client software that is on the appliance, never had this upgrade issue before.

I have always installed the client files that were on my appliance - and believe I have always read that if you install the client software that is stored on the appliance, you should always upgrade with the client fsoftware from the appliance and not use the standalone install.  Am I not correct in this thinking?

As CRZ explained - the 2.6.0.2 Appliance software is now 'super slim' and no longer contains the Windows Client software.

It should not be necessary to load the Windows Addon for the Appliance as well the 'standalone' 7.6.0.2  Windows binaries onto the Appliance.

I have not seen the requirement to install clients from the Appliance only.
Any idea where you have seen this?

We have Appliance customers all over with 'standalone' NBU client binaries installed.

I know I have read it multiple times in the Admin documents but can't locate it right now.  I did download the install you linked to, and it installed fine without prompting me for an uninstall.  In looking at the installed programs within the Control Panel of Windows, I do notice a difference.  The install you linked to shows up as 'Symantec NetBackup 7.6.0.2 (7.6 Release Update 0 Maintenance Release 2)' with 0000.2000 showing in the version column - and the install that I downloaded from my appliance shows as 'Symantec NetBackup Client' with no mention of version except 7.6.0.2 showing in the version column.  I assume that the client files I uploaded to my appliance (and subsequently downloaded for install) are for a new full install of 7.6.0.2 and the software you linked to is the update.  I will continue with running just the update because uninstaqlling and reinstalling is more work than necessary.
