NBU SAN Media license possible with Hyper-V

Manumohan

Master server version: 7.7.X

Master server OS: win 2012 R2

We have requirement to backup a Hyper-V VM. There is only one VM under the Hyper-V server. We need to backup the VM and some of the local data on Hyper-v server.

Hype-v server specification:  1x6 core CPU

OS: win 2012 R2

There are no pass through disk. All are virtual disk (vhd)

Number of Hyper-v VM guest to backup = (1xWin 2012 )

Dedicated HBA is available on the Hyper-v server to move backup traffic to SAN.

The license we have is " 1x Enterprise Client license 7.7 Tier1". With this license can we install SAN media server package and backup Hyper-v VMs & OS and Data backup of Hyper-V server, excluding vhd extentions?  Or  we need an  "Netbackup Enterprise Server 7.7 Tier1" license.

Other question.

Does "Netbackup Enterprise Client license" will allow to perform traditional backup(Install NBU Client agent on VM) if situation demands?

During SAN media server installation it will ask for the keys to supply. which key i need to apply there , is that same Enterprise Client license keys?

Please discuss your licensing requirements with your local reseller.

I have seen many times where resellers (Partners) have different opinions, even when we read the same information in the Licensing Guide (not publicly available).
Quite often we need to ask Veritas SE for clarification.

This is what I see in the Licensing Guide:

Enterprise Server:
One server license for each physical host when either:
- The physical host also acts as a NetBackup server, e.g. Windows Hyper-V server acting as a media server.
- One or more resident VMs act as a media server or master server, e.g. a disk media server and/or a master server in a VM.

Enterprise Client license includes SAN Media server as well as NetBackup for Hyper-V option.

A SAN Media server can only backup itself.
In other words, the client name in Clients tab of the policy must match the hostname of the SAN media server.

The moment a different client name is added in Clients tab, NBU sees this as 'Remote' or 'Network Client'.

Another extract from the Licensing Guide:

NetBackup Enterprise Client SAN Media Server should not be used to backup data from networked Clients. In order to backup data from networked Clients and remote Clients to the SAN attached tape resources, a full NetBackup Enterprise Server license is required.
