The screenshots show that the image headers are intact.

You say that the .f files for those images are gone?
Any idea how many are affected?

The only logical explanation is that someone manually deleted it for some reason.

If images were expired (naturally or with bpexpdate), then NBU would remove header files as well .f files.

I guess the only way to get it back will be to expire all images on that media id, and then start with phase1 and 2 import...

Its either there, or its not. To determine if its really there, search for the image via the catalog section (or using bpimagelist). If you don't find it there, its not there. If you find it there, then there is some issue in BAR that can be investigated further.

What was the retention level of backups done in 2011?

We are able to see the images for the other dates... however while checking the catalog files we are unable to find the .f files in it for those images

It was 7yrs retention.. And i can see the images in tape as well. The problem is there is no metadata in the catalog database to display files that backed up  and need  to restore that metadata back.

Please help us to understand where you see this?

If the .f files are gone, then there are 2 possible reasons:

  1. Backups have expired. Either naturally because of retention period or manually by a backup admin.
  2. Someone has manually deleted image files and folders.

If data is still on tape (not overwritten), you can re-catalog the tapes by doing phase 1 and 2 import.

We tried importing but it is failing with error code 175

You need to check Job details and bptm log to troubleshoot status 175.

Please see the below import job details and attached backup image found on tape & suggest.

So, status 176, not 175.

Error bptm (pid=168476) WRN - Cannot import media id 001390, that media id is already active on this server.

Does this mean that you have some expired and unexpired images on this tape?

What does reports such as 'images on media' (bpimmedia) and 'media list report' (bpmedialist) show for this tape?

What does bpimagelist command show for the client for the date/period (after 22 May 2011) show?
(bpimagelist only query image headers, not .f files.)

PS:
You never told us where you see this?
" And i can see the images in tape as well. "

Please find the attached output.

Regarding on the statement where i can see the images on tapes for that i hav already shared the screen shot at first.

Where u find the headers are intact from the provided screen shot... ?

So far we have observed for one client as we have got the request to restore the older data.

Images on media and bpimagelist pulls information from image headers.

Those cannot be deleted as they reside in the EMM database.

Just a final command request from my side - please run the following and post the text output?

bpimagelist -backupid calprod1_1317558173 -L

You should see something like this as part of the output:

Files File Name:   <policy-name>_1317558173_FULL.f

If you then cd to /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/calprod1/1317000000, what does the contents of this folder look like?

Probably a good idea to run 'bpdbm -consistency 2' at some stage.

Thanks Marianne for your help.

The one which you shared "I guess the only way to get it back will be to expire all images on that media id, and then start with phase1 and 2 import.." worked it out.
