NDMP Backups

Hi Guys,

I'm currently running NBU 7.0.  I want to perform backups of CIFS shares from a SUN Unified Storage 7210.

Can anyone suggest a way to do this?

As the SUN hardware is not on the Symantec approved hardware list NDMP backups don't work.  At the moment I'm copying the data from the SAN to the local HDD of the master server, however as the data on the SAN is increasing this is becomming less and less practicle.

"Cannot connect to SAN"

The Client name in the policy must be the name of the machine that needs to perform the backup.
In your case - the Master/Media server.

The NAS hostname is contained in the Backup Selection.

Please also de-select BMR in policy attributes.

Can we assume that your Master and/or Media server is Windows?

If so, check that the NBU Client Service is started with domain logon account that has sufficient priveleges on the share.
Add the UNC path in Backup Selection.

Hi Marianne,

Yes, the Media/Master Server is a Win2K8 R2 Std server.

I have confirmed that the Client servcie on the Media/Master Server is running under a domain account that has access to the Shares.

I've set the client property in the policy to the SAN and added the UNC path for the share I want to backup (\\SAN\SHARE).

I have tested the policy and it failed with a 'can't connect to client(58)' error.  I have confirmed that I can ping the SAN using the host name from the Master/Media server.

I was going to say "what?"  then realized the op is NOT doing NDMP backup so he should not use SAN name after all.

OK.  I have removed the host name for the SAN from the clients tab and replaced it with the host name for the master/media server with a Hardware of NDMP and a OS of NDMP.

In the backup selections tab, I have a UNC path name to one of the shares hosted by my SAN.

About to start a manual backup.  Here goes nothing!

The CLIENT that is doing the backup is your Master/Media server which is a Win2K8 R2 Std server..

Therefore the Client name, hardware and OS in the policy should match your Master/Media server details (NOT NDMP).

The client name in the policy is what's most important here. The backup will work.
