Hello,

I have a single HP Tape LIbrary with LTO4 tape drive and a robot.

I wanted to use this for normal backups and also NDMP backups.

We dont have SSO licensed.

Is that possible to use for NDMP and other backups at the same time.

Go ahead and configure the remote NDMP , where your regulare media server(media manager ) take the data from NDMP  and sends to Tape library.

SSO is if you want to share your drives between multiple media servers. As you don't have the license and only using 1 tape drive it is not much required in your environment.

Make sure you create the Media Manager Storage Units as you want to write both NDMP and non-NDMP data to this storage unit.

Once done your normal policy( like windows) and NDMP policy can go to this storage unit without any issues.

If you want to learn or know more about NDMP store units and Media manager storage units and differences then Check the Symantec NBU NDMP admin guide 7.5 page 22

If you want to use this tape drive for normal backups (media manager type storage unit) and also for local NDMP (backup data will not be sent over LAN. ----- NDMP type storage unit) you will need SSO license. If you do not want to buy SSO license then only option is creating a media manager storage unit and sending normal and NDMP backups to it however in this case NDMP backup data will be sent over LAN.

Remote NDMP does not require SSO, but you need to have NDMP licence.

go ahead and read the T/N that have Provided in about post to see how to configure remote NDMP

For remote NDMP does the backups go on SAN or LAN

its travels over the LAN between the NDMP and Media server... and over the SAN between the Media server and Tape library.

as you dont have SSO, I am not seeing any other options than remote NDMP.
