 Hi ,

I need help for Flash backup restoration issue.

We are taking backup as per below details.

Master server - Win2K3 -- NBU 7.0.1 (few weeks back we upgraded from 6.5.5 to 7.0.1)

Client -- 2K3 -- NBU 7.0.1 (media server)

Policy Type – FlashBackup

Approx data on client -- 2 TB

When i initiate backup job it taking 18 hrs to successfully completes.

When try to restore 5 MB file to different location (D:\ on master server) its taking 22hrs.

As we are using NBU 6.5.5 at another location as per above details & it taking few minutes to restore same amount of file from FlashBackup.

What is the Storage Unit Fragment size set to?

If the default of 1 TB is used, the entire 'tar file' on tape needs to be searched for individual files.

I have seen customers using various fragment sizes (size in MBytes):

2000
5000
10000

Good restore performance is seen with all of the above.

The smaller the fragment size, the slower the backup... the better for restore performance.

Again thankx for your quick responce,

I enabled STU fragment size and set it to 5000 but no improvement .....

Few more, i am not able to cancel this restore job from GUI or CLI.

Kindly find attached files for more details.

Changing the STU fragment size will not help your current restore as this only comes in to affect when you take a backup.

If your restoring an image that was backed up before you set the STU fragment size then it will have no affect as the image was backed up using the default settings 1TB so it will still have to search the whole image for the required files.

I assume that your 6.5.5 server already has these settings in and you are trying to restore a different flashbackup image from this server which is why it so much faster.

That is correct changing the fragment size is not going to help. The issue is, that the meta data needs to get read in memory on the master server (that's why you see twice begin read). You will see process bprd eating up a lot of memory. It does not make a difference if you are restoring back the entire raw device or just a single file.

It works as designed.

Hi Friends,

Thank for your suggestions,

As recently i come to know, that restoration is not happening only (it taking more than 48 Hrs).

And restoration job also hangs on after finding image from catalog (as shown in above attachment)

Even i can not cancel that restore job by GUI or CLI. (until i run bpdown)

There is no any single bprd log in master server (3 days back i set verbose level 5).

Help me for troubleshooting direction on this issue.

You have to restart the nbu services on the master server to increase the logging for bprd.
