correct... please go though the Netbackup deduplicaion guide.. as Marianne said...

and for storage space.. you can purchage the applicance from symantec when you wnat to have the hardware with netabckup installed it self..

but its not mandatory, you can use any SAN storage and connect them to your existing meida servers and configure the MSDP, provide they meet the minium requirements.

copy from above T/N, and more details in deduplication guide

Storage area network (Fibre Channel or iSCSI), direct-attached storage (DAS), or internal disks.

The storage area network should conform to the following criteria:

  • A dedicated, low latency network for storage with a maximum 0.1-millisecond latency per round trip.

  • Enough bandwidth on the storage network to satisfy your throughput objectives. Symantec supports iSCSI on storage networks with at least 10-Gigabit Ethernet network bandwidth. Symantec recommends the Fibre Channel storage networks with at least 4-Gigabit network bandwidth.

  • The storage server should have an HBA or HBAs dedicated to the storage. Those HBAs must have enough bandwidth to satisfy your throughput objectives.

Local disk storage may leave you vulnerable in a disaster. SAN disk can be remounted at a newly provisioned server with the same name.

if you are planning to get NAS storage from netapp, that is not suppport.. only SAN storage is supported for Netbackup MSDP

have a look at below T/N

Same question was asked here:

Preparation is key to MSDP installation and configuration.

PLEASE go through the requirements in NetBackup Deduplication Guide

NetApp 10GbE NFS to ESX host then into a datastore present as a drive letter to the VM guest works for me.

Whether its supported or not is a different matter.
