Need to Upgrade from current version 7.1 to 7.6.1.1/7.6.1.2

Hello All,

I will need to upgrade our company Netbackup master server from version 7.1 to 7.6.1.1 or 7.6.1.2. Currently this master server is a Solaris M4000 Sparc server with this specification 2 SPARC VII+ 4-core 2.66 GHz and 32 GB RAM and the OS installed was Solaris 10 and netbackup version is 7.1.0.2

I was reading the Netbackup Compatibility list and found there is a link below which mentioned there could be performance issue for UltraSparc T3 servers.

I am trying to look through SORT and Netbackup hardware compatibility list PDF. Where can I find information whether our company exisitng Solaris server will have this issue or it is safe to upgrade with the current specs? Hope to get some feedback and advice on this.

Hello

There is no list, you can check the NetBackup Planning/Performance guide if you like but that will just tell you how to calculate the amount of Ghz and GBs or RAM you might need. As far as I recall those SPARC processors were not the greatest and the links you found might have been referring to the performance if the server is configured as a deduplication / MSDP server. If it only a master it should be fine.

Please upgrade to 7.7.x rather than 7.6.x.

The linked TN refers specifically to T3 CPUs - more slower cores/threads.

You are using SPARC VII+ CPUs - fewer faster cores/threads.

I think that the issue with the T3 CPUs was that their cores were too slow for the later versions of NetBackup running as a Master Server.

IMO, I think you can forget this T3 CPU issue, and instead you could use the NetBackup Capacity Planning Guide to re-size (i.e. review the size of) your master server, then I would base an upgrade go/no-go decision on the outcome of a "sizing" excercise knowing your current hardware specs.

Would love to but we have a number of Windows 2003 systems need to continue to be backup for some time..if not mistaken if we upgrade to 7.7.x, the Windows 2003 systems backup will not be supported
