From my understanding, to backup a Netapp, you would use NDMP. I also believe that is the best practice. However, my customer is stating otherwise. Would someone be able to clarify this?
Thanks.

It by far the fastest option to retrieve data from a NAS device. Other method may work but are very slow (reading data off a CIFS share).
NDMP has it's disadvantages as well, planing required.
NetApp offer a long range of snap backup methods - including snapvault (I think this is what the customer has in mind). But to me snaps that are contained in the samme array isn't really a backup.

really a backup"
True, but it can all be done over n/w to another filer - which is what they are intending to replace most of our backup infrastructure......
