NetApp Snapvault... Wildcards?

spitman
Level 5

I know that wildcards in NDMP backups is a new thing...

I'm running 7.6.0.3. We have just started using a new netapp snapvault, and it doesn't seem to like wildcards... but I can run a backup without a wildcard, and it's fine.

Is this because it's a snapvault? Here's a cross sample of the error (exit status 106):

Okay FAS serices with on Tap 8.2 ( 7 mode) is supported , for Wildcard entires...

hopefully the one that you have  also in 7 mode..not in cluster mode.

if its 7 mode

below are the 2 possibles reason i am seeing

1) see if below one.. if that is the issue

"You cannot use any wildcard characters that also match file names. For example,
a backup selection might include /vol/vol_archive_01/autoit*. This specification
might match a path name such as /vol/vol_archive_01/autoit_01/. However,
if this specification also matches a file name like"

2) snap valut does not support it.. ( better to confirm with Support team)

below is the note what i find from 7.6 admin guide.. i understand that master is in 7.6..0.3, how about the media server...?

Wildcard characters in backup selections for an NDMP policy
With NetBackup 7.6 or later, you can use wildcard characters in regular expressions
or the directive ALL_FILESYSTEMS to specify path names in NDMP policy backup
selections.

Note: Wildcard characters are not supported in releases of NetBackup before version
7.6. To use wildcard characters in NDMP policy backup selections, both your master
server and the media servers on which NetBackup for NDMP is installed must run
NetBackup 7.6 or later.

Wildcard characters in regular expressions or directives are valid for streaming and
non-streaming NDMP backups.
Note: Directory-level expansion is not supported for some NDMP servers. Some
NDMP filer vendors do not have the APIs that Symantec uses to support wildcard
characters lower than the volume level.

If you specify a backup selection using wildcard characters lower than the volume
level for these filers, status code 106 is generated. The following message is
displayed: Invalid file pathname found, cannot process request.
Currently, only NetApp disk arrays support wildcard characters for backup selections
lower than the volume level.

see if below one.. if that is the issue

"You cannot use any wildcard characters that also match file names. For example,
a backup selection might include /vol/vol_archive_01/autoit*. This specification
might match a path name such as /vol/vol_archive_01/autoit_01/. However,
if this specification also matches a file name like"

All of our servers are at 7.6.0.3 (I always keep them at the same level). They are RHEL6.4.

The SnapVault host is a NetApp FAS 8020 running Data OnTap 8.2.

Ram, this is our issue... we are running in "C" (cluster) mode.

Since wildcard support is new... and C mode is new... I really hope that Symantec will add support for C mode in 7.7...
