NetBackup 8.3. Upgrade or fresh install

serg2002

Hi,

We currently have NetBackup 7.7.1 on Linux. We are planning to upgrade it to the version 8.3 and have it installed on a brand new hardware. I would like to ask what would be the best way to do this:

- Migrate the current version of NetBackup to the new hardware and then upgrade NetBackup

- Install fresh version of NetBackup and then migrade data from old NetBackup

Beside upgrading NetBackup we will need to change Linux hostname also.

Thank you.

This is your best option.  Take catalog backup on old server. Prepare new server with same hostname, install same NBU version to same path, recover catalog. Run on old version for a day or two, then upgrade.

- Install fresh version of NetBackup and then migrade data from old NetBackup

It is not possible to 'migrate' between different versions. Catalog recovery can only be done using same version, same hostname.

This is not a DIY job. You need Veritas consulting services. They can migrate to a new version software and change hostname.

Thank you.

Hi Marianne,
We haven't had a chance to actually start migration for almost a year. Now are back to the process.
Beside restoring NB catalog what else we need to migrate/copy from old NB server to a new one to create exactly same configuration? I am thinking of:
/usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf
/usr/openv/java/auth.conf
Is there anything else?
Thank you.

Hi @serg2002

The Catalog backup collects most of the information required to put the server back the way it was (config files etc.). You can see what files are grabbed by using the BAR interface to examine the last full NBU-Catalog type backup from the master.

Certainly bp.conf and auth.conf should be saved for reintegration. Any touchfiles or scripts in the bin directory you will also want to capture - such as bpstart_notify/bpend_notify scripts.

If you have any OST plugins, you will need to grab the appropriate version of those to reinstall.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
David

Thank you David.
