NetBackup Appliance Upgrade

Rocky67

We have a master server which is currently at netbackup appliance 3.1 .(this is the new environment). We have a netbackup appliance version 2.7.2. model 5220. (was a media server)which was decommissioned from old environment and we have to add this as a media server to the new environment where the master is appliance 3.1.

We are opting to flash the netbackup applaince(model 5220) with the ISO image version 3.1.1(as a media server) and add this media server to the master 3.1 in the new environment.

So,my query is:

"Do we have to first upgrade the master 3.1 to 3.1.1 and then upgrade(flash with 3.1.1 ISO image) the media server appliance?

OR

Can we first upgrade(flash with 3.1.1 ISO image) the media server appliance(model 5220)? While doing so, we may have to provide the master server name. However, the master server is currently at netbackup appliance 3.1.

Can we first upgrade(flash with 3.1.1 ISO image) the media server appliance(model 5220) and then upgrade the master from 3.1 to 3.1.1?

Hello,

I would recommend to do the factory reset on that media server appliance 5220.

Note: The appliance 5220 is going to end of support in next few months (August 14, 2018)

The master server should always be same or higher version than media and client servers.

I would recommend to add the appliance on existing master server with  3.1 verison. Test all comunication and backup/restore.

Then upgrade the Master server to 3.1.1 and then other Media and client server.

If I look at the  'Compatibility between NetBackup versions' section of  NBU 8.x OS SCL: http://www.veritas.com/docs/000115691 , it seems that NBU 8.1 master only supports NBU 7.7 up to 8.1 media servers.

The same will apply to Appliance versions.

I don’t have hard information but be aware there are some scenarios where a Factory Reset is not possible. Also as the N5220 was not a current system when N3.1 or 3.1.1 were released, those versions may not install on N5220. You may therefore have to install an older version, upgrade to N3.x and then configure the Appliance. A further issue is the embedded temporary key in older media has probably expired by now so installation fails; temporarily setting the BIOS date back may get round that.
Anyway good luck. Andrew
