NetBackup Media Server on ESXi host

Hi there

I've been searching the internet without much luck. I've been wondering if anyone has ever installed NetBackup Media Server software on an ESXi host and whether it is supported.

I want to play around with some things. Nothing serious.

Regards

You are correct.

There is no backup software for the ESXi server.
This is a VMware limitation as far as I know.

The question about Virtual NBU media server is asked quite often.
You can find the link to "Support for NetBackup in a Virtual Environment" over here:
NetBackup Master Compatibility List
https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH59978

In short, VMware virtual media server is supported with disk storage only.
No tape.

We use a VM windows media server in our test environment, and it works great !

Except we upgraded it to 8.1.2 to test the upgrade process and now it cannot connect to the master...

Hi Marianne

Thanks for the reply. I was asking more specifically about installing NBU on the ESXi OS (physical host), not on a virtual machine. I doubt it's possible since ESXi is a rather reduced functionality Linux flavour.
