When should you use the policy directive - Active Directory Application Mode?   Should it be with ALL windows clients or just Domain Controlers?

Correct - just use either ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES or Shadow Copy Components plus the individual drives

Not really needed for anything unless you have a very specific requirement just to back up that component, and then only on AD Servers

From this tech note:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH148393

If a Windows backup policy needs to be setup to protect an Active Directory system which also hosts one or more Active Directory Application Mode/Lightweight Directory Services, there is no need to explicitely list Active Directory Application Mode:\ in the file list. Any one of the following directives in policy file list will protect both Active Directory and Active Directory Application Mode/Lightweight Directory Services.

So i guess you really need just Shadow Copy Components for everything and if it is a Domain Controller you get ADAM as well, but ADAM is a lot less that the whole Shadow Copy Components.

i.e. ADAM is only a small part of the system so in general it wouldnt be backed up.

Also remember if using ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES that includes the System State / Shadow Copy Components so you do not need to list both in a policy or you will back it all up twice

Hope this helps

So, for a plain vanilla Windows server, it is not really needed, correct?
