NetBackup Standard Client License for VMware Guests

K_Miller

Running a NetBackup Enterprise Server 7.6 environment

I have a VMware environment with two ESX hosts supporting 10 Windows Server guests each.

I have a NetBackup agent installed on each of the 20 VM Guests.

How many Standard Client Licenses are required?

Thx,

You need 2 standard client licenses

From licensing guide.

Using “in the guest” protection hypervisor support, i.e. not using specific NetBackup virtualization integration (V-Ray).
One Standard Client license for each physical host, when one or more resident VMs are protected in any way by NetBackup. For standard clients, LPARs are not relevant.

  •  VMware

  •  MS Hyper-V

  •  Citrix XenServer

  •  Linux KVM

  •  Oracle VM environments

  •  Other hypervisor or virtualization environments

20 for plain client.

it might be cheaper to buy two Enterprise Client licenses which would let you backup as many clients (within each of your two VM hosts) in whatever way you see fit, either as plain client or as a VM.

I am seeing multiple answers to this question.

I've seen some people say that only physical hosts are licensed. If this were true, why would I need to buy an additional license for each guest on a single ESX host?

Yes, 1 std clt per host if you're using in guest backup.
