NetBackup Vault - Eject only tapes that are full?

TeeOne

I work for a SMB and am lucky enough to have NetBackup Vault to track tapes, etc. I'd like to setup Vault to only eject tapes that are registered as being full to go offsite. Is this a custom script that I'd need to build? Any help is appreciated.

unfrotunatly Vault does not work on that whay..  it does not look for the if tape got full or not..

if only look for the parameters that are listed in fist tab (choose Backups) and  Eject tab

and what ever the tapes that are fit for those parametes will get ejected even it has very less emount of data is used .

this is because , Vault is maily for Offsite data protection.. so what ever the data avaliabe in the tapes will be safe in offsite..

just because of tape not yet filled and keeping the tape in library will lead to loss of data which has been already in tape in case of disaster.

they are few ides which got submitted for the same you can support those if you want.

Thanks Nagalla.

Are there any resources for creating a script that can do essentially the same thing I'm needing? Doesn't look like these requests will get any traction. Is it robtest.exe that I'd be using?

probably stop using Vault and go for scripting to get this done...

i am not expret in scripting..

but your script needs to do the following things

1) find out  the full medias using the bpmedialist command

2) run vmchage command against the full medias.

Or just buy a few more tapes.

At the end of the day, by waiting for tapes to be full, you are defeating the point of vault.  The idea of course is to get images offsite as soon as possible.

One thing you could do, is use a specific volume pool for duplicated vault images, and set the number of partially full media in this pool to 1 or 2.

This will mean only that umber of tapes can be written to at any one time, but, will ensure that the tapes become full quicker.

I can understand a SMB might be very cost-concerned, so buying tapes maybe more challenging, and probably prefer sending less tapes offsite.

To make sure tapes are fully utilized, or can hold as much data as it could, try to reduce the number of volume pools you use. Of course there are trade-offs for that, but if you priority is "full media", I believe it's justifiable.

One Option that i could suggest is - Set "Max Partially Full Media" to 1 to the Volume Pool you are using for the backup.

NetBackup will only use one tape until its Full. But be aware only one backup or duplication job will run which may affect your backups or duplication jobs.

The Symantec content was moved to Veritas VOX, but the IDEAS section has been discontintued as there are other avenues to log product enhancements with Product Management.

Please see this post for details regarding requests for enhancement:
