NetBackup (erreur 96)

Merci

Hello all, I have problems to create a valid backup policy on LTO 3. In fact I have a TS3100 installed on win 2003 server R2 32bit and Veritas NetBackup as backup software. the backup disk (hence the client to the server hard disk backup pass without problem). But then saved to the TS3100 to the LTO problem, error 96 keeps coming back. If a person to a solution, a clear procedure to configure Veritas NetBackup that helps.

Thank you

Check all densities in Device Config, Media and Storage Unit.
Example from our lab:

# bpstulist -L

Number of Drives:     1
On Demand Only:       no
Density:              hcart2 (14)
Robot Type/Number:    TLD (8) / 1
Max Fragment Size:    5000
Max MPX/drive:        4

# tpconfig -l

Also double-check the pool that is specified in the policy - you either need tapes in Scratch or in the pool that is required by the policy.

If you have a Scratch pool, verify that the pool is marked as 'scratch'.

# vmpool -listscratch

Step 1: Confirm that Windows Device Manager sees robot (unknown Medium Changer is fine) as well as tape drives. I personally prefer Veritas/Symantec tape driver for 32bit Windows.

Step 2: Stop and disable Removable Storage Manager.

Step 3: Use Device Configuration Wizard to configure robot and tape drives. Wizard will also create Storage Unit.

Step 4: Use Media GUI to create volume pools, otherwise all tapes will go to NetBackup pool by default. (Read up in Admin Guide I about pools and also about Scratch pool.)  Add Barcode Rule to add new tapes to Scratch pool if you want to use multiple pools & Scratch (info also in Admin Guide I - chapter 9, Volume pool operations).

Step 5: Inventory robot (Info also in chapter 9, Adding volumes using a robot inventory update)

Step 6: Verify that all densities are correct as per my previous post - yours should all be hcart3.

Step 7: Select Storage Unit and Volume pool in backup policy.

Hope this helps!

All NetBackup manuals: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/290282.htm

Admin Guide I for Windows: ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/290203.pdf

Step 4 is actually a lengthy topic on it's own. You need to decide if you want to separate data into diffrent pools, for example to separate data from different departments in your organization or maybe seperate database backups from file system data.... Once you start creating pools, it's advisable to create a Scratch pool and let all tapes go by default into this pool. All other pools that do not have tapes will draw from Scratch.

To Inventory Robot and create a Barcode Rule:

1  In the NetBackup Administration Console, select Media and Device Management > Media > Robots.
2  Select the robot you want to inventory.
3  Select Actions > Inventory Robot. In the Robot Inventory dialog, Device host contains the name of the host that controls the robot and Robot contains the selected robot.
4  Specify the options for the inventory.

To create Barcode Rule - Click Update and select Advanced Options.
Click Barcode Rules tab. Click 'New'
In 'Barcode tag' type the unique starting characters of your barcodes. Select the pool where your tapes must be added by default.
Close the 'Advanced Options' window and click 'Start' to update volume configuration.

If you don't have a need for different pools, you can stick with the default NetBackup pool. When you inventory the robot, the tapes will automatically go into the NetBackup pool. Your policies must be configured to use the NetBackup pool.

PLEASE make an effort to get hold of the manuals. It is not possible to explain an entire chapter in a single post. If you have installation media (cd or dvd) the manuals will be on the 'Documentation' cd/dvd.

Hi Bertin

In all fairness, I believe that I have given you enough information to solve status 96.

You really need to book yourself on a 5-day training course or spend LOTS of time reading manuals.

I will try to answer your last set of questions:

How the data is copied to the tapes:
Data is sent via the scsi or fibre cable to the tape drive. Data is written in 'tar' format to tape.

how to recognize tapes:
Your library has a barcode reader. Ensure that you have barcode labels on the tapes before you start doing backups.

how to restore them:
You don't restore tapes - you restore backup images. Part of the catalog information in NetBackup is the media id used for each backup. When you browse for backups, you specify the client name, select the backup date, and then select the files/folders that you want to restore. NetBackup will find the media id in the catalogs. If the tape is in the robot, it will automatically be mounted, positioned to the correct place on tape and the restore will start. If the tape is not in the robot, you will see a message that media id XXXXXXX is needed for the restore and that it needs to be put in the robot.

Hi Marianne,
