NetBackup recommended RedHat server configuration

Thomas_Anthony

Hello,

Are you aware of any hardware standards for the NetBackup Master and Media servers ?  The site is looking to upgrade/replace the older RedHat NetBackup servers in preparation for the upcoming upgrade to NetBackup 8.2.x from NetBackup 7.7.3...

Questions we're looking to answer:

  • Is there a standard Master server configuration we should follow
  • Is there a standard Media server configuration we should follow
  • What are the connections and types needed for media and master
  • How much internal storage is needed
  • How much SAN storage is needed
  • How many RH licenses do we need for

Currently have 1 Master, 4 Media servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.8 using NetBackup v7.7.3 writing to an EMC Data Domain disk storaage appliance.  We will be upgrading to NetBackup 8.2.x in the next month or so.

You can make user of Veritas sort for your Installation and Upgrade System requirements

https://sort.veritas.com/checklist/install

Your upgrade path will be 7.7.3 -> 8.1.1 -> 8.2 (Cannot upgrade directly to 8.1.2 or 8.2)

You will have two projects -> 1) Upgrade to 8.* on the old hardware. 2) Restore the Catalog on the new hardware

There is advise to find in the NetBackup Backup Planning and Performance Tuning Guide

https://www.veritas.com/bin/support/docRepoServlet?bookId=99904379-99904385-1&requestType=pdf

Keep in mind this document is now aged and current requirement are larger (CPU, RAM & DISK).
