Netbackup 7.6 - MSDP Maximum Pool Capacity

I am aware that the maximum capacity of an MSDP pool was 64TB - but as the 52xx Appliances can now ship with 4 expansion trays and can support a de-dup pool of upto 144TB I am assuming this has been increased across the board.

The data sheet for the 5230 states:

Dynamic storage—Usable capacity can be any combination of up to 144 TB deduplication pool or 148 TB Advanced Disk pool (non-deduplicated storage).

I will be creating an MSDP pool on storage attached to a W2K8R2 media server, and would like to allocate this over the 64TB figure.  Can I now do this with NBU 7602 installed on the Master & Media servers ?

Thanks,

AJ.

Hey AJ,

Not with 2.6.0.2...    2.6.0.3 IS necessary... I've installed a few already with 2.6.0.3 code. Using all 4 shelves only (Leaving the 4.5 TB head for AD only).. You will get a shade over 140TB usable storage which can ALL be applied to deduplication. 64TB barrier broken in a big way.

This is an Appliance only feature .. you cannot do it with any other MSDP as yet I am afraid

So your Windows servers will still have the 64TB limit

OK - good to know.  I am puzzled why this is an appliance ONLY feature as opposed to a 7603 feature (and a little dissappointed).

Thanks Guys.

The additional capacity is only documented in Appliance Release Notes:

2.6.0.2: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7156
2.6.0.3: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7458

Nothing about increased capacity in NBU Release Notes:

7.6.0.2: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6840
7.6.0.3: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC7221

Perhaps it makes the Appliances a more attractive purchase option than a build you own server .. now would they really do that - LOL!

#EDIT# and it is available on appliances from 7.6.0.2 by the way .. you dont need to be at 7.6.0.3 to be able to add extra shelves

MSDP capacity on "build you're own device" will be raised in a further version of netbackup according to a trustworthy source.

The "build you're own device" will still be limited to less than the appliance.  I have heard that it will be only 96 TB, not the full 144 TB capacity of the appliances.
