Netbackup Catalog Archiving

Hello,

We currently have a Netbackup catalog that is approximately 1.2tb in size.  I think a lot of the catalog space is used by NDMP backups and some of our infinite backups required for legal purposes.

We have never performed any catalog archiving.

We have an AIX master server, and are running Netbackup 7.1.0.4.  Due to some ongoing projects, we will be unable to upgrade to Netbackup 7.5 or 7.6 until at least July.

I would like to peform some catalog archiving before we upgrade, and would like some feedback from others.  Any best practices, suggestions, or things to avoid would be greatly appreciated!

I have the Symantec documents, but would like to know what kinds of things you personally would suggest or that has helped you either determine what to archive, how to organize it, and other recommendations.  Also, if you have any suggestions on better ways to perform backups to reduce catalog space, please let me know.

Thanks for sharring!

As far as the catalog and size :

What is a NetBackup catalog?
Image database growth depends on the number of clients, policy schedules, and
the amount of data that is backed up.

The image database is the largest part of the NetBackup catalog. It consumes about 99% of the total space that is required for the NetBackup catalog. While most of the subdirectories are relatively small in the NetBackup catalogs, \images can grow to several tens, or even hundreds of gigabytes. In addtion the longer the retention, the larger the catalog database will grow. TDatabase growth is an important consideration for catalog backups.

To determine catalog space requirements, see “Determining catalog space
requirements” in the sysadmin guide.

If the image catalog becomes too large for the current location, consider moving
it to a file system or disk partition that contains more space. For more
information, see “Moving the image catalog” in the sysadmin guide
