Netbackup Client 7.1.0.4 backing up Windows 2012 Domain Controller

ExchangeFTW
Not applicable

Hello

I'm trying to determine if by using the Netbackup Client 7.1.04, I can backup my Windows 2012 Domain Controllers?

The information I've found is confusing at best:

NBU version 7.1.0.4

Please use the following link to obtain the 7.1.0.4 version that supports , MS Windows 2012 server .

https://symbeta.symantec.com/callout/?callid=0A794F29873A424C80273A3019D704AB

You should receive an email from symbeta@symantec.com with a link for download.  For any questions, please click on the "contact us now" button.

This 7.1.0.4 install has numerous limitations and this client package DOES NOT support the following functionality/capabilities of the NetBackup Windows client:

-System State Backup. Only file system backup will work properly. So data backup is a “yes”, but DR is a “no”.

-Granular backup of Active Directory is not supported with this package, however non-Granular Active Directory and full backup are supported.
[Not sure what this means, can we backup our AD or not?]

-Restoring files backed up from an NTFS file system, to an ReFS file system, and vice versa is not supported.

-Agent support is not available with this package. For example, no SQL Server agent support.

-There is no BMR support with this package.

-There is no NBAC (VxAT/VxAZ) support with this package.

-No new Windows 8/2012 features are supported with this package. For example, no support for NTFS deduplication file system.

This package provides basic backup and restore functionality for file systems (NTFS and ReFS) only and can be used in NetBackup domains running NetBackup 7.1.0.4 and above

PLEASE NOTE :  The same rules of patch levels between the Master / Media/ and clients still apply.

Please see : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29677 - Version Compatibility

Thanks with any help figuring out if we can authoritatively backup our Windows 2012 Domain Controllers and AD using the 7.1.0.4 Server/Client.

Per the OSCL listing, dated 5/25/2015, support for Windows 2012 clients started with NBU version 7.5.0.6. Upgrade the client version to that release level or higher if you want this to work.

Active Directory is backed-up within the "system state" (which in this context actually means the Windows object of Shadow_Copy_Components: which itself includes the Windows object of System_State:).

So, because NetBackup Client v7.1.0.4 cannot (or is not supported to) secure a copy of Windows 2012 "system state" - then NetBackup Client v7.1.0.4 cannot be used to protect Active Directory of a Windows 2012 server instance.

Symantec issued a special 7.1 Client installation for W2012 while working on full support for W2012. You need to upgrade to 7.5 or 7.6 for proper support as per the OS SCL (link above ). Latest NBU version is 7.6.1.1 - please consider upgrading to this version for latest features and fixes. Upgrade path: OpsCentre Master server Media server(s) Clients.
