Guys

i am using Netbackup 7.7.3 (Master and Media Linux Rhel) with DD990 connected to Media server using OST.

is it possible to Zone all clients HBA to Datadomain and run backups over the FC or shall i configure Media FT and SAN client for this ?

I was under impression that DDBoost can send the Data over Fiber ?

i wanted to run all data backup over the SAN, Please advise.

Let me explain the difference the data path, it might be easier to understand

Enterprise Client >>>> Storage Device

SAN Client >>>> Media server >> Storage Device

Then look at the software to install

Enterprise Client = Server Software Binaries (even though its called a client)

SAN Client = Client Software Binaries

Enterprise Client is basically a media server install with the limitation that it can only back it self up, it can service other clients as a (full) media server would.

You need to check with EMC. They have been promising BOOST over FC for a while now, and actually offer it for SOME versions of OS. Linux and Windows I believe are all set, depending on your version of DDOS.

I am on Solaris, and the latest versions do NOT support all hardware, so I am still SOL on my master server...

You may need to upgrade your DDOS to 5.5 or greater, but again, it is NOT a netbackup issue, but EMC.

readig the manual, I also think the hba need to be reserved for BOOST over FC only, so you cannot use the same ports for tape or VTL access.

NetBackup 10.2.0.1 on Flex 5360, duplicating via SLP to Access 3350, duplicating via SLP to LTO8 in SL8500 via ACSLS

You may want to start with NBU HCL to see which features are supported by DD over FC.
I doubt that FT media server is there...

Q: is it possible to Zone all clients HBA to Datadomain and run backups over the FC

A: Yes, but then you'll install these clients as enterprise clients (san media servers) and configured DDboost over FC for them.......or you'll have them write to a FC media server that talks to the DD on the backend via FC (or ethernet).

Hi Riaan

thanks for reply.

install these clients as enterprise clients (san media servers) ??

is it sepearate NBU client software that needs to be download ? or  normal installation using agent software and run below command to enable FT client ?

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpclntcmd  -sanclient 1
