Netbackup Deduplication vs Hardware DR4100 deduplication, OST...

Hi experts,

I need your advice, we need to install a new DR4100 DELL apliance and we have NBU 7.5 running on our backup master server.

The question is which is the better way to use the HW and/or SW features available.

Netbackup Deduplication is better than the HW deduplication???

Which is the best practice to use deduplication HW vs SW and which is the best configuration for the storage appliance, OST, CIFS, NFS....

Thanks in advance

Best regards

J

Without knowing the box I would always prefer OST. OST can do optimized functions for Netbackup but NFS and CIFS can't.

From Dell hompepage:

  • Support for OST helps the DR4100 deliver fast backup and restore performance, and provides enhanced functionality such as optimized duplication-based replication.

The difference between Symantec MSDP and a OST appliance is that MSDP does dedupe at the client and OST appliance does the dedupe on the back-end mening all data has to be transfered via the LAN.

You may want to compare features of the DELL appliance with NBU Appliances in the NBU 7.x HCL:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76495
