Netbackup Error Message 96 on the server

I have a windows server which has dds drive attached to it. I have installed NB Master server on linux. I would like to know if I can isntall NB Media server on the Windows Serfer and create different polic's which can send few server backup jobs to DDS and few to LTO depending on the policy. Would we need to buy license for this?

When I activated a new policy which i created for my mail server the backup job fails. I tried backup form both server and client side. On the server I get the message ~ BACKUP OF CLIENT EXITED WITH STATUS (96). UNABLE TO ALLOCATE NEW MEDIA FOR BACKUP,STORAGE UNIT HAS NONE AVAILABLE". On the client I get ERROR STATUS CODE 198 and 246. What could these mean and I think my configuration seems OKAY but since in my early days of hands on netbackup I have some doubts.

Status Code 96 indicate that there are no volumes for backup. There are somethings wrong in configuration. And, Status Code 198 and 246 indicate that there are no schedule of User Backup/Archive type for clients.

Can you tell us your configuration? If you can, show outputs of following commands on master server.

# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpstulist -U -g
# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bppllist -U
# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/available_media

And don't forget telling us on which policy and client the error occurs.

Hi,

your volume pool is set to netbackup.
Check what status is shown for the tapes. Are they FULL ?

What are the retention levels of the active tapes? If the two tapes you have are already assigned then if there retention levels do not match the retention level of your backup the tapes will not be used. Also are you using the netbackup pool as your scratch pool or do you have a seperatly defined scratch pool?

Yes Matthew is Right

Find these answers
1) Are the tapes full.
2) Check if Allow_Multiple_retension is enabled if your tape have been have different retension than the POlicy thats failing.
