Hi Techies,

Currently we using netbackup 7.7 with windows 2012 r2 and our backup mode is Lan based.

And all of our physical servers, Tape Library, Storage are having SAN Connectivity through brocade fabric with HBA.

Now customer is asking for changing to SAN Based Backup(Lan Free Backup).

Can you please suggest what are the requirements for SAN BAsed Backup and what are the changes reqquired to the current environment and is there any extra licensing &  hardware is required??

Your options are to configure each client as either SAN Client or SAN Media server.

For SAN Client, you need a Linux or Solaris Sparc media server with supported QLogic HBAs.
Windows media servers cannot be used.

For SAN Media server, you will need Enterprise Client license for each client and install and configure each client as a media server to backup own data.
You will also need SSO license to share tape drives in the library.

currently we have a master and 2media servers with windows 2012 r2 and netbackup 7.7.

and we have different clients like windows and linux in which some are virtual and some are physical.

all the backups are runningthrough LAN now.

Now we want to take backup of all clients and media andmaster servers through SAN.

Shall we proceed???

Hi Arun - unfortunately your question encompasses all of:  "requirements, scoping, sizing, design and implementation"... and so, IMO, is impossible to answer without a very detailed breakdown of basically your entire infrastructure right down to the cabling and nuts and bolts of it all.

Marianne has given you the best possible answer based on your posting.

All I could possibly do, is add that you may want to have a look at the performance and tuning guide:

https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.DOC7449

...but even this suggestion of mine is a fair bit mis-leading, because only perhaps a few aspects of even just one of the main five elements of your question are touched upon in that guide/document.  i.e. this document will *not* answer all of the elements of your question.

Sounds to me like you need a few days of Professional Services consultancy type work for someone to take a good long hard and deep look at your infrastructure and then that someone should be able to make some fairly detailed recommendations.

HTH.

Thank you for your information. what you said is right.

Thank you Marianne for the infomation and tech notes.
