Netbackup Replication director vs On command protection manager

We are using Oncommand protection manager for snapvaul/snapmirror for Netapp volumes/qtrees. It's having all the functionality like policy, schedule.

Can I assume Netbackup replication director just as another product to protect Netapp volumes/filer. Is there any addtional features with Netbackup replication director that can't be achieved through protection manager.

Replication director is new in NetBackup 7.5 and is actually another layer that is on top of NetApps Oncommand protection manager via the NetBackup NetApp plugin.

Here is NetApps infomation on replication director and NetBackups role: NetApp® Plug-in 1.1 for Symantec® NetBackup™

Chapter 2 of the NetBackup Replication Director 7.6 Solutions Guide (DOC6465), gives more information on the prerequisites for using Replication Director

If your familar with Vmware this is kind of like NetBackup using vcenter to snap the ESX server.

Hi twinkle_sapra,

NetBackup Replicator Director will integrate with NetApp thru DFM and will coordinate all backup process (snapshot, vault, replication, tape off). Additionaly, NBU will catalog all your files!

Cataloging per se is a great complement for OnCommand. Besides that, all your backup process will be managed by your backup team!

Some restriction are applied (like been able to deal only with NAS volumes) but it still evolving and I think we'll see this functionality extended to SAN volumes.

We still investigating this integration because it have a lot of scenarios of implementation, but we're thrilled about this functionality.

I hope it can help you.

Regards,

Mauro
